City u18s extended their winning streak to three games with a 3-0 victory over Southampton on the South Coast.

Goals from Jorge Intima, Brandon Barker and Thierry Ambrose increased City’s tally to 11 in the last three outings with none conceded, and Jason Wilcox’s men are now unbeaten since 28 September.

Deprived of the services of Kean Bryan through a minor injury, and missing Jack Byrne, Billy O’Brien and Ash Smith-Brown who travelled to Norwich with the EDS, Wilcox made two changes from the side which comfortably despatched Arsenal last time out.

Yvan Wassi replaced Kean Bryan in the back four, while Charlie Albinson took his place between the sticks. The attack had a familiar look, with Barker, Ambrose and Intima all in good form in a City shirt.

It was a tough start for the Sky Blues, who found Southampton in energetic form in the early stages, and their pressing style made it hard for City to find their own rhythm.

It was the hosts who created the first real opportunity, and Jake Hesketh might have found the opening goal after dispossessing Tosin Adarabioyo in the penalty area, but his resulting shot slammed into the sidenetting.

At the other end, Olivier Ntcham won a penalty for the visitors after he went down under the challenge of Kyle Clinton, but his spot kick was saved by the strong hands of Harry Isted in goal for Southampton.

Adarabioyo was the hero shortly afterwards, his last ditch block saving a certain goal from Saints striker Ryan Seager.

Neither side could break the deadlock before the half time whistle blew, but City emerged stronger in the second period and three goals in 17 minutes made the game and the points safe for the boy Sky Blues.

The first of the three came on the counter attack, with the blistering pace of Ambrose setting him well clear of the scrambling defenders. Seeing Intima unmarked at the back post, he unselfishly squared it and the Portuguese winger had the easiest of tap-ins.

City’s attacking quality began to pay off, and Barker doubled the advantage with a fine solo run from midfield, curling a delicious shot into the corner.

With the hosts pressing forward in their eagerness to cut the deficit, City landed a knock-out blow through the excellent Ambrose, who wriggled free in the box after another counter attack and slid the ball home underneath the keeper.

Bersant Celina might have made it four but misdirected his header just wide of the post under pressure from the Saints’ defence, while Seager had another goal-bound shot blocked for the hosts.

The game fizzled out as the final whistle approached, with City adept at keeping the vast majority of possession.

Next up for the u18s is a home clash with Bolton Wanderers on Saturday 16 November.
