Owen Hargreaves' opening goal on his City debut provided the fairytale stuff, but the practicalities of this bread-and-butter Carling Cup will be more important to Roberto Mancini.

A year ago his bold team selection could not withstand a fired-up West Brom and crashed out at the first time of asking. This new mixture still rested stars but got the job done perfectly well.

City go into the hat for Saturday's fourth-round draw thanks to strikes from Hargreaves and Mario Balotelli, and a team effort solid enough to comfortably ease out the lacklustre holders.

It was a more than decent performance from an unusual-looking line-up as Mancini rested the whole of Sunday's starting eleven at Fulham, although goal-hungry Sergio Aguero was lurking on the bench.
