Bio: Fan favourite, cult hero, ‘the Ponytail’ – Martin Demichelis proved his critics wrong to win a piece of every City supporter’s heart.
A rock in the centre of defence, his astute reading of the game and ball-playing ability from the back breeds confidence in those around him.
Remaining calm in the face of the fiercest storm, Martin continues to make his detractors look silly and the news he had extended his contract until the end of the 2015/16 campaign was met with exultation by those of a blue persuasion.
The Argentina international made Manchester his latest stop on a trophy-laden career that has taken in four countries and two continents.
First playing under Manuel Pellegrini as a youngster with River Plate, a pair of Primera Division Clausera titles and over half a century of appearances were enough to convince Bayern Munich of the centre back’s pedigree and his seven years in Germany yielded another 11 medals to an ever-expanding collection.
Reunited with Pellegrini at Malaga, he scored the club’s first ever Champions League goal and helped them on an improbable run to the semi-finals before following the ‘the Engineer’ to Manchester.
Martin had a tough start to life in the Premier League but naysayers were left hastily backtracking when a series of outstanding performances in the 2013/14 run-in helped bring a second Premier League title to the Etihad Stadium.
A Capital One Cup winner and World Cup finalist in 2014, Demichelis has become a mainstay in City’s defence and a valuable leader at the heart of the back line – with or without his ponytail.
