Yaya Toure was on the scoresheet as the Ivory Coast defeated Gambia 3-0 in their World Cup Qualifier.

The City midfielder was at the centre of the action throughout as he completed 90 minutes for his country, and the Elephants cemented their place at the top of their qualifying group.

The Ivory Coast were already a goal to the good when a free kick was floated into the box just before the hour mark and Yaya rose tall to head powerfully into the net.

Wifried Bony and Salomon Kalou scored either side to mark a comfortable victory.

Yaya might have added to his international tally of 13 goals, coming close on several more occasions. He was close to opening the scoring for the hosts after 20 minutes when Gervinho found him unmarked in the box, but he slid his shot just wide of the post.

He also lashed a strike into the sidenetting shortly after Bony’s penalty, and smacked the ball against the bar as the final whistle approached.

Brother Kolo Toure came on for the last 10 minutes to shore up the defence, but still found time to attempt a header at goal from a free kick.

Their compatriot Abdul Razak remained an unused substitute.

Pablo Zabaleta

Something of a regular fixture for Argentina these days, Pablo Zabaleta chalked up another 90 minutes and a clean sheet for his country, who comprehensively beat Venezuela 3-0.

Two goals from Gonzalo Higuaín plus one from Leo Messi were enough to give Zaba’s side an easy win on the night.

That leaves them firmly in charge of the South American qualifying group, where they sit top by four points.
