Ah, April Fool’s Day – love it or hate it, you can’t avoid it, and the pages of the media are full of it this morning so one has to be extra careful when sorting through in order to bring you the latest gossip and rumour doing the rounds.
Sky Sports lead-off with comment from Blues’ hitman Sergio Aguero who says he won’t be rushed into returning from injury. Despite a stop-start campaign, the striker has still managed to bag 15 Premier League goals in 17 appearance this season, and is currently sidelined following aggravating a hamstring injury against Barcelona last month.
“"With this recovery I am trying to do my best to be able to play again, but I cannot do it in a hurry," Sergio is quoted in the report.
“"I do think to myself if something happens now, I will lose the rest of the Premier League season and the World Cup."
“Aguero also insisted that he has no plans to leave City this summer and coach Manuel Pellegrini has told him he needs to win a Champions League title with the club first.
“"He says to me that I can't leave without winning a Champions League," said Aguero.
“"That's the objective of each player in Europe.””
As the title race simmers its way into the penultimate month of the season, the Daily Star’s Nick Lustig quotes a reflective Samir Nasri who recalls his decision to swap the Emirates for the Etihad three years ago.
“"I spent three seasons at Arsenal without any title and at the end of the season we sold our best player that was Cesc Fabregas,” offers the influencial midfielder who has arguably had his best season in England this term.
“"I don't want to be disrespectful, but I had a meeting with Arsene Wenger who told me to not be worried, he signed Gervinho and he will get reinforcements.
“"I preferred to join City and I won titles and indeed I earn a better living. And why not a second national title in three years?
“"I am very happy with my choice."
“Nasri also confirmed he has entered talks to extend his stay at City beyond the end of next season when his current deal expires.
“"We have just started talks so far. We didn't find any agreement yet. But it should be sorted out.”
“"I want to stay. I can feel people appreciate me and the coach is trusting me."”
Elsewhere, the Manchester Evening News’ Stuart Brennan has had his calculator out and determined that Manuel Pellegrini has used the least players (23) out of any team in the Premier League this season, putting an end to the myth that the Blues boss has the luxury of a bottomless pit of talent at his disposal. It’s well worth a read.
So, there you go. Hopefully no April Fool’s Day antics have slipped into this morning’s round up… I’m off to get ready for the Moon Slide!
