German trip a success, says Academy boss

City’s Academy squad returned from Germany at the weekend with praise ringing in their ears from Academy manager Mark Allen

The pre-season training camp proved beneficial for all concerned both on and off the pitch, with the young Blues proving more than a match for their German counterparts.

“Germany was a resounding success, both on and off the field,” said Allen.

“The lads acquitted themselves perfectly for the 12 days they were away, in terms of their behaviour, attitude and application. That showed on the pitch, too, as we won all three games during our stay.”

With an emphatic 8-0 win against Empor Berlin kicking off the tour, the young Blues then turned their attention to Hertha Berlin and following a 2-1 win, City faced their stiffest test yet.

“The third game that we played was against a men’s side, TSG Neustrelitz, and again, through concentration, application and hard work, we came away with a well-deserved 1-0 victory,” said Allen.

All of the players really enjoyed the trip and I think the lads will take something positive with them that will be useful as their careers progress

“In one of the games, we were 1-0 down to a very big and physical Hertha Berlin side and we had to effectively change the side completely.

“We put a different team out in the second half and what was pleasing was the guys who went off were briefing the guys who went on for the second half, advising them of what to watch out for and what to look for.

“I think that paid a huge dividend in terms of where we came out with the final result.”

Allen also revealed the team will be returning to Germany to take part in a tournament. He said: “We’re off on our travels again this week, leaving on Wednesday evening for Oberdorf.

“We play in an under-19 tournament there this weekend and we have a couple more friendlies before kicking off the new season in earnest on August 21 with a home game against Arsenal.”
