In the first of a new season-long series, Head of Academy Mark Allen gives his verdict on the u15s Lion City Cup campaign and previews the forthcoming u18s season...
We got back under way after the summer break at Platt Lane on Monday and preparation is in full swing for the 2012/13 season.
I followed the u15s at the Canon Lion City Cup in Singapore on a daily basis, reading the diary to see what they were doing and what they were getting involved with.
On and off the field and it was great to see how hard they were working. Activities like the CSR visits to the SDSC and the coaching clinics really endorsed what our development programme is all about.
I was following the semi-final against Ajax on Twitter and I saw that we were 2-0 up and set for the final though unfortunately it wasn’t to be. It was the first time we’ve travelled that far and I was very pleased with the third place finish and the player’s conduct.
On the field I think we did very well coping with those conditions, there were 15-year old players out there and some even younger – there were 13 or 14-year olds too and I'm very proud of how the boys acquitted themselves out there.
This was the most reassuring and pleasing thing for me. They were coming up against players at least a year older than them which is great as part of their development.
Of course, I believe we can always do things better and I think we can learn a lot in terms of game preparation and perhaps as we move forward we can focus more when the big games come and prepare accordingly but I stress, this is all part of their programme.
The under-18s fixtures are released on July 16, we know the teams in our group but the schedule has yet to be decided. We are in friendly action against Wrexham on July 11 and against Leicester just before we travel out to Portugal for a pre-season camp on July 23.
We’ll have player profiles of all the players here on the Official Site soon, so keep your eyes peeled to find out who is in Adam Sadler’s squad for the forthcoming season.
I look forward to using this column to keep fans up to date with all happenings from Platt Lane over the coming season as we usher in another campaign.
