Firstly let me say that what an honour it was to be named captain for the game against Sporting.
I know we didn’t get the result we wanted but it was still great for me to pull on the armband as I did in the second half against Portland Timbers.
People will read what they want into the Lisbon game but we were playing for just the second time with about eight World Cup players still missing and Lisbon were having something like their eighth pre-season friendly.
We know we could have done so much better and that we made mistakes but better to get those out of the system now than have them happen in the middle of August.
I have got to say that I have never played in tougher conditions than those
I lost a couple of kilos during the match and at times it was hard to get enough fluids in.
It wasn’t just the heat but also the humidity. Just about the only player on our side that wasn’t bothered was Stevie Ireland...he actually likes it!
The rest of Saturday was a day off so some of the lads crossed the river from where we are in New Jersey and went into New York where the temperatures, according to the local news, was 100 degrees. I hope it’s cooler when we play the Red Bulls tomorrow afternoon when we aim to put on a much better display.
Hans Backe is their manager and we remember him from his days at City with Sven. He is a really nice guy and I saw what he said about me in his video interview with mcfc.co.uk I will have to give him the money later!!!
He has got no chance of getting me on loan though unless he can control the temperature in the Red Bull Arena which by the way is a really nice ground.
I will let you know how it went in the next diary after we arrive in Atlanta in midweek.
