Club America, City’s first opponents during the summer trip to North America, play in the Mexican Primera Division. They were one of the founder members in 1943. The two sides meet on 16 July in San Francisco (pictured).
City and Club are no strangers having played against one another on US soil last season when the Mexican side were beaten on penalties in Atlanta after the game had finished 1-1. It marked Yaya Toure’s debut for the Blues.
The Mexican League is split into two different championships the Apertura (winter) and the Clausura (summer). Apertura runs from August to December, with Clausura beginning in January and concluding in May.
The most recent championship that Club America added to its honours list was the Clausura in 2005.
During the 2010 Apertura the Eagles, as they are known, reached the semi-finals of the championship but were beaten by Santos by 5-4 on aggregate.
The 2011 Clausura, which concluded in May, saw Manuel Lapuente replaced as head coach replaced by Carlos Reinoso, a former Club midfielder who had enjoyed two successful spells playing for the side during the 1970s and 1980s.
This is third time he had been appointed as head coach, having previously obtained the role in both 1981 and 1998.
The Mexican side finished second in their respective group during Clausura but were knocked out of the play-offs, when Morelia beat them in the quarter finals 5-3. Morelia then continued to the final where they were defeated 3-2 by Pumas UNAM. During the season, Angel Reyna was the side’s top scorer with 13 goals.
