Manchester City Ladies overcame a stubborn Coventry side, needing a late winner from Sarah Buffel to seal their place in the Fifth Round of the Women's FA Cup.
City started the game brightly on a very uneven pitch, the first chance fell to Krystle Johnston after five minutes, but the striker could only find the arms of Coventry Keeper Sue Wood who held onto the drive. Johnston's second effort arrived in the eighth minute, but this time she could only fire the ball over from some distance.
The Citizens edged the game more the half wore on, with Coventry content to soak up pressure and hit the visitors on the break. The best opportunity of the half fell to the Blues, when neat work by Young down City right hand side saw Johnston cross toward the six yard box. As the ball flashed across the area, the onrushing Nightingale got a toe to the ball, but could only guide it back towards the other side of the post, much to the relief of the Coventry backline.
Both sides went in level at the break with City unlucky not to be in front.
The tempo slowed a little at the beginning of the second period as Coventry began to gain a foot hold in the game, pressuring the City backline in the opening 12 minutes at the half.
After weathering the initial Coventry storm, the Citizens attacked down the slope seeking the opener. On the hour a Sarah Danby cross was headed over by Danni Young as she stretched to reach the ball.
The 67th minute saw a real opportunity for the home side as a corner was driven into the area, a Coventry player rose tallest to nod the ball onto the bar and over. City knew they had to raise their concentration level and ensure they did not let the game slip away.
Manager Leigh Wood made a double change on 70 minutes with Sarah Buffel and Saffron Jordan replacing Danni Young and Krystle Johnston.
The change was to pay dividends when in the 84th minute Buffel found herself alone in the area. Thinking the offside flag would be raised Coventry seemed to stop; Buffel flicked the ball around Wood to give City the advantage.
City nearly doubled their lead a minute later when Buffel was clear again, though this time the outstretched leg of Wood kept Coventry in the game.
As the minutes ticked by City held firm to book their place in the 5th Round of the Women's FA Cup.
Leigh Wood gave his thoughts on the match:
"A good team performance today, the players showed good patience and quality on the ball to deservedly go through to the next round of the FA Cup. We created some good chances and probably should've won by a few more goals. Well done Ladies".
