2013 kicks-off with a real challenge for City Ladies this weekend as they make the trip north east to the home of the National Champions Sunderland.

The sides last met in Manchester at the end of September with City losing out to a Beth Mead winner ten minutes from time. The Black Cats had a formidable 2012 and remained unbeaten throughout the whole calendar year.

City will be looking for a victory to start 2013 in the best possible way after defeat in their final game of 2012. Sunderland rounded off the year in style with a seven-goal thrashing of the league’s other promoted team Portsmouth.

Leigh Wood looks ahead to the contest:

"This weekend we know we are in for a tough game. Sunderland are a well organised with some quality players. Having not played a game for over a month it's the ideal match to kick off 2013. We will be looking to avenge our loss to them earlier in the season and put in a display that will enable us to kick on and have a good second half of the season.

The squad is looking strong and competition for places is good. The players can't wait to get back playing."

Kick-off is at 2pm at the Hetton Centre, Sunderland, DH5 9NE. Follow LIVE match updates on twitter @MCLFC.
