As tension mounts in the Premier League title race, City players enjoyed an afternoon of respite as they joined forces with a handful of Manchester schools to compete for the title of Etihad Skills Champion 2014.
Fernandinho, Alvaro Negredo, Martín Demichelis and Pablo Zabaleta drew inspiration from local schools including Ravensbury Community School and Sandilands Primary School as they tried out City in the Community’s new ‘game frame’ equipment followed by an animated game of futsal.
Co-funded by the Club’s main sponsor, Etihad Airways, the game frame will see CITC travel in and around Manchester visiting schools, community groups and public areas as part of their football roadshow programme. It includes passing drills, measures accuracy and power of shooting, dribbling and fitness challenges all using innovative electronic equipment. All players took turns on the shooting power drill and recorded impressive scores as the fascinated youngsters watched on.
Taking place at the Club’s Platt Lane facility, the students then got the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of the pros as they took turns to compete in five different game frame activities. Zak from Abraham Moss Junior Football Club earnt the highest cumulative score and was crowned ‘Etihad Skills Champion’.
The afternoon concluded in an Etihad Futsal Tournament and the City stars each captained a team of four players. Demichelis’s team were eventually crowned victors.
Spanish ace Negredo enjoyed being part of the day: “It’s great to meet local schools and see the smiles on their faces as they play football. The game frame will be a great addition to Manchester!”
Head of City in the Community, Mike Green, said: “We’re looking to take football to as many young people throughout Manchester as possible so it’s great that the players have got involved today to inspire even more people. City in the Community are empowering lives through football and Etihad Airways support will be invaluable in helping us continue.”
Clive Wratten, Etihad Airways’ UK General Manager, said: “Etihad Airways is delighted to support the City in the Community Roadshow in Manchester, another exciting collaboration between the club and airline which builds on successful projects we’ve worked on in Abu Dhabi, Mumbai, Delhi and the Seychelles. It will be fantastic to work closely with so many youngsters in Manchester and we are sure it will be fun for all.”
The Etihad Skills Champion won a pair of tickets to the penultimate game at the Etihad Stadium along with the winning team of the Etihad Futsal Tournament who have also each received a pair of tickets.
The roadshow will form part of the School Sport programme which is funded by the Premier League and aims to provide structured sessions linked to the national curriculum for PE. City in the Community coaches will also work alongside school teachers to deliver high-quality curriculum time coaching aimed at improving physical literacy and fundamental movement skills.
