Last season 76 primary schools took part in City in the Community’s (CITC) Strike a Balance Healthy Schools project.
All the young people who took part in the scheme entered a competition to create and design a poster to encourage healthy eating.
The overall winner of the competition was year five pupil Emily Thackeray from Bowker Vale Primary School in Crumpsall.
Emily was recently surprised at school from a visit from Mike Dixon, Healthy Schools Co-ordinator who presented her with a Manchester City home shirt and a very exclusive Manchester City football signed by all the first team stars.
Mike said: “Emily’s poster was brilliant she put lots of effort into it and was rewarded for her hard work, her class really enjoyed Strike a Balance - congratulations to Emily from all the CITC coaches.”
Strike a Balance is a partnership between CITC and Manchester Healthy Schools which see’s CITC offer a free five-week healthy living programme to 120 primary schools in Manchester.
Using examples of Premier League footballers such as Joe Hart and Gareth Barry, each session covers a different area of healthy eating and is followed by a football session. Topics covered include:
• The balance of good health
• Why we eat what we eat
• The importance of physical activity
• Cooking healthy, balanced meals
