Jim Cassell has been busy this week on a fact finding mission that he hopes will point the way to the Blues becoming world leaders in the production of youth footballers.
Former Academy Chief Cassell is in the Emirate with the club party alongside ex-under 18s coach Alex Gibson to forge ties in Abu Dhabi.
They have had a series of meetings with various club officials and although his new role is a fair leap from readying Blues youngsters for a crack at City’s first team, Cassell is enthusiastic about his new role even if it means a spell of relocation to Abu Dhabi.the Emirate.
This is a new chapter in the club’s future and we are privileged to be part of the development.
“We don’t consider being in second place at anything but there is a natural twitchiness at the moment because of being used to being on the move all the time whereas there is a thinking process that has to be done. It is a case of thinking business rather than thinking coach.
“Most people at my age are not venturing into a new career but there is the chance with this project for us as a team to create something unique. It is a question of watching this space and see how we develop.”
Plans at present are necessarily fluid but Cassell has been encouraged by the vigour and desire to succeed he has found on his travels around Abu Dhabi.
“Everybody knows it is really early days and we are fact finding. We have been to three clubs whilst we have been here,” he explained.
“It has been quite interesting. There is a little bit of difference in the way they approach the job. We are still in the early stage of formulating a plan for this part of the world which fits in with the overall plan of how the international Academy is going to pan out.
It is a new venture and a blank sheet of paper. We want to put something constructive together that will help City develop worldwide.
“As a club we do not want to follow trends but create our own identity though that is not going to be easy because we might do something that we think is magnificent but doesn’t suit the needs of the job here.
“There is a link with CITC already and we are looking at whether the Abu Dhabi is looking, without sounding arrogant for an elite programme. That is the way we are thinking.”
Tune into the full interview with Jim and Alex over the weekend when there will also be in depth chats with Nedum Onuoha, Sylvinho and Craig Bellamy.
