Calling all overseas City fans

  • 07 January 2010 11:16

Are you a City fan living abroad? Or do you have friends or relatives overseas who support City? Would you like them to ‘come home’ to the City of Manchester Stadium for derby day in April? Well here’s your chance, courtesy of Etihad Airways, Official Club Sponsor.

All they have to do is upload a video telling us why they should win to www.etihadfootball.com/cominghome.  Before each home game between now and March, we will show the best entry since the previous home match on the website, and also announce it at half-time.  All City fans will have the chance to vote throughout March for the winner, who will receive two return tickets from their nearest Etihad destination*, 3 nights’ accommodation, VIP hospitality and executive seats!

The winning entry for the Stoke game was Stephen Barrett from Cape Town, South Africa.  Stephen was born in Reading in 1966 and travelled extensively during his youth due to his dad being in the Army.  His family settled in Salford in the early seventies where he spent a lot of time at his aunt’s house in Moss Side, where he made regular visits to Platt Lane to watch the Blues train.  Ever since then he has been hooked on City!

He emigrated to South Africa in 1995 and met wife Catherine, his Moonbeam, in 1996, who he soon converted in to being a City fan!  His last City game was the 1-1 draw with Coventry City at Maine Road in January 1996.  Since then they both watch City whenever they are live on TV.

Stephen’s City collection includes every home shirt since the 1994/1995 season, and he would love to get some of them signed if he is flown home.

So, why does Stephen think he should come home with Etihad...

“It will be beyond a dream come true to fly my Moonbeam home, with a stopover in Abu Dhabi to reunite with a much missed friend.  To then return home to experience the majestic City of Manchester Stadium, for the first time from the other side of the television screen on the all important derby day alongside old mates.  There our hearts will beat in unison as we join with City fans to see our boys live in action, to hear the thunderous cheer, to smell the raw unwavering passion and to feel the immense pride as City upholds their motto “Superbia in Proelia”.  It will be an epic adventure that will be reminisced over with the generations to come…One Life, One Love, One City!  May we live the dream of “Coming Home”?  Our City we will always believe in you!”

To watch the video that Stephen and Catherine submitted, visit www.etihadfootball.com/cominghome and click on the ‘finalists’ tab on the left hand side.  You can also view the other entries that have made it through to the final.
