City Ladies made it two wins in a row against opposition from the Midlands when they beat Derby County 3-2 on Sunday.
Early pressure from Derby resulted in a goal in the 14th minute scored by Jo Skully but City were level through Krystal Johnston 10 minutes later when she nodded in a great cross from Lauren Beckford.
The goal settled City down and provider turned scorer after 32 minutes when Beckford put City ahead.
City dominated after the break, and five minutes after the restart a quick one-two between Lindsay Savage and Jade Malpas resulted in a thundering shot from Savage that left the goalkeeper with absolutely no chance. Derby pulled one back through Jenny Anslow, but City held on for a thoroughly deserved win.
Manager Leigh Wood said "A physical Derby team put us under a lot of pressure today and took a deserved lead. The players showed great character to pull it back and go into half time in the lead. A change of system allowed us to have more ball in the second half, which resulted in a number of chances. We should have killed the game off but credit to Derby - they kept going and pulled one back which set up a tense last 15 minutes!"
"We are looking forward to Nottingham Forest in a couple of weeks in our last group game in the league Cup and are now focussing our attention on the local derby league match next Sunday, 19th September, against Curzon Ashton."
