Brian Marwood feels City have a genuine chance of making good progress in the Champions League following the draw in Monaco.

Blues fans can look forward to trips to Bayern Munich, Villarreal and Napoli, and it all kicks off when the Italian side visit the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, 14 September.

"It's a fantastic draw," declared the Club's Chief Football Operations Officer. "There are four fantastic sides in this group, and it's going to be extremely competitive. I genuinely believe that these are four sides that can compete on an even keel.

"We feel that this is a fantastic part of Manchester City's history to be part of the premier European competition for the first time.

Our fans are going to enjoy every moment, as they have over the last three years, which has been an incredible story for our football club.

Napoli, like City, are making their Champions League debut but Bayern know all about both the current format and the old European Cup, having been European champions on four occasions, including a hat-trick of wins in the mid-1970s.

"We have a manager that will know all about Italian opposition!" Brian added. "I'm sure he'll know Napoli very well, and as we do for every game Roberto and the coaches will prepare the teams in the right way. Even though we have to balance things on every front, we really feel we can do well in this competition with the squad we have.

"Bayern Munich is a fantastic club with a proud history, everywhere at this level you are going to be up against some seriously good opposition. But that's what it is all about and we want to compete at this level. We believe we can and we have a squad that is blessed with great talent and endeavour."

Bayern's Philipp Lahm told his club's official website, “This group is madness. You have Europe's strongest leagues going head-to-head, so every match will be a footballing gem for the fans. But I'm looking forward to it, this is the real Champions League."
