Npower League 1 watch: Eyre off the mark

It’s been a week of mixed fortunes for the quartet of League One managers with City connections.

Steve Eyre’s Rochdale bounced back from their opening day defeat at Hillsborough with an extra-time win over Chesterfield in the Carling Cup, with Platt Lane Academy graduate Ashley Grimes scoring twice, including the winner.

‘Dale’s reward is a trip to Loftus Road in the second round, and they showed steely resolve to rescue a point at Spotland on Saturday against Huddersfield Town. Lee Clark’s highly-rated outfit looked to be heading back along the M62 with a win until Grimes struck in stoppage time to give Steve his first point in senior management.

Sheffield Wednesday, managed by Gary Megson, held their nerve to win a penalty shoot-out over Blackpool in the Carling Cup last Thursday. But they were in action again less than 48 hours later and their winning start to the season ended when Bournemouth ran out as 2-0 winners.

Uwe Rosler’s Brentford were knocked out of the Carling Cup by Hereford when Yoann Arquin struck in the 92nd minute, and that was followed by defeat in the league at Bramall Lane, with Sheffield United winning 2-0.

Paul Dickov will want to put the first week of the season firmly behind him after Oldham lost both their opening league fixtures and were knocked out of the Carling Cup. The ‘Latics were beaten on penalties after they fought out a 1-1 draw with Carlisle, and the 480 mile round trip to Yeovil Town will have seemed even longer after they were beaten by the Glovers 3-1 at Huish Park.
