As we reach the half way mark in the CITC Soccer School tour of Ireland, the small but picturesque town of Donegal was the setting for the next series of events.
Finn Park, home of League of Ireland side Finn Harps FC was the venue for this morning’s soccer school. Ideally positioned just a four minute walk from the Villa Rose hotel where the tour party are staying, the 7,500 capacity stadium provided an excellent facility for our coaches to run the all-day session.
Interestingly, we discovered that this wasn’t the first time the club had visited Finn Park, as on 12th August 1984 City’s first team including Alex Williams, Clive Wilson and Paul Power took on Harps in a friendly. On that day the Blues ran out 5-0 winners with Neil McNab scoring two of the Blues’ goals.
The high standard set by the children in Limerick was matched by some great skills, effort and team work by the budding Donegal youngsters – check out the photos from the event. Tour sponsors Vimto provided the refreshments throughout the course to keep the players fit and raring to go.
The evening saw the tour group descend upon Bonner’s Corner Bar; the meeting place for the Donegal branch of the Official Supporters Club. A fabulously entertaining night of craic, stories and fund raising followed as the locals expressed their utmost delight at having us in their town.
As a gesture to the branch and its home, Paul Lake presented Bonner’s owner Joe with their very own Heart of the City plaque which puts the Donegal pub alongside worldwide venues in New York, Abu Dhabi and Paris as being officially one of the best places to meet up with fellow Blues – watch out for the full write up tomorrow.
On Thursday we drive to Cookstown in Northern Ireland for the final part of the tour. Can’t wait to meet everyone!
