The City Legends travelled to Spain to play The Costa Blanca Manchester City Supporters Club in a charity match competing for the Ken Barnes Trophy.
The Costa Blanca Blues are the only MCFC supporter’s club branch in Spain and one of the largest outside the UK.
Proceeds from the match were donated to Sands, a charity supporting those affected by stillbirth and neonatal death
After arriving on Thursday 7 June, the legends took part in a golf day on the Friday before the big match took place on Saturday 9 June.
A fine roll call of club legends including Joe Corrigan, Tommy Booth, Les Chapman, Eric Nixon, Andy Dibble, Asa Hartford, Dave Bennett and Gary Bennett were managed by Derek Partridge.
In front of a healthy crowd at the Community Stadium, Playa Flamenca, near Torreviejo, the City legends came out 1-0 winners with Eric Nixon rolling back the years to produce a string of fine saves.
Life President and Vice President of the Supporters Club, Bernard Halford who attended the weekend’s activities said,
“It was a fantastic weekend and it was great to see the ex-players mingling and signing autographs with the crowd after the match.
Everyone had a great time and it was good to raise money for an important charity. I’d like to thank the organisers, sponsors and all who took part in the weekend.”
The legends will be turning out again on July 28 when they take on Bristol City at Ashton Gate for ex-Blue Gerry Gow’s testimonial match.
