It’s 34 days since Sergio Aguero ended City’s 44 years of hurt with one historic swing of his right foot and we hope you’ve recovered as it’s only 69 days until we do it all again.
Fixtures for the Barclays Premier League 2012/13 season will be published on Monday morning at 9am as the Blues prepare to plot the course for their title defence season.
The opening day is one of the most eagerly awaited occasions in English football, as supporters celebrate the end of their summer footballing fast and get the opportunity to see their new-look teams in action.
City faced newly-promoted Swansea City on the first day of last season and it was Edin Dzeko who scored the first of the Blues’ 93 league goals in the 56th minute on Monday 15 August. The match will be best remembered as Sergio Aguero's debut, which the striker marked in style with two goals.
The season will run from the weekend of August 18 2012 through to May 19 2013 and all eyes will be on who the new Champions will face in their first engagement of the new league season.
FA Cup winners Chelsea will be City’s first competitive opponents in the Community Shield on August 12 in the annual curtain raiser which will take place at Villa Park.
The match has been moved from Wembley to the home of Aston Villa due to the Olympics and City will be hoping to lift the shield after losing 3-2 to Manchester United last August.
Ironically, City’s first and last Premier League matches were at home to QPR. You won’t need us to remind you of what happened on 13 May 2012, but on the opening day of the 1992/93 season, City drew 1-1 with the Rs before going on to finish ninth in the table.
West Ham United return to the Premier League this season and perhaps City’s most memorable opening day in recent years came at Upton Park in a 2-0 win on 11 August 2007.
There were five debutantes in the City starting line-up that day: Vedran Corluka, Javier Garrido, Elano, Martin Petrov and Rolando Bianchi, with Geovanni also coming off the bench to score on his debut in Sven-Goran Eriksson’s first game in charge.
City last tasted defeat in their first match on 17 August 2008, going down 4-2 to an Aston Villa team that included Gareth Barry. A seven-minute hat-trick from Gabriel Agbonlahor saw off Mark Hughes’ side who replied through Vedran Corluka and Elano.
Boxing Day is another notable day on the fixture list – last season City went to West Brom and were frustrated to only come away with a 0-0 draw against Roy Hodgson’s men.
The Manchester derby has not occurred on Boxing Day since 1898 when the Second Division clash at Hyde Road ended in a 4-0 win for City – could history repeat itself in 2012/13? All will be revealed at 9am on Monday.
We’ll have all of the 2012/13 fixtures first here on the Manchester City website, so you can start marking your calendars ahead of what is going to be another dramatic season.
