The official MCFC Supporters Club branch in Brisbane is the latest to receive Heart of the City recognition. Eric Fitton from the group explains more...
The Brisbane Blues formed into a MCFC Official Supporters Club branch late in 2010. A few Blues had started to congregate In The Pig N Whistle on match days to watch a game now and then but with the help of social media word got out and numbers started to increase.
We are now growing rapidly as word spreads throughout Brisbane with more and more coming down to The Pig N Whistle to watch our beloved team.
The kick off times here are a bit of pain with most games kicking off midnight or later Saturday or Sunday nights. We have a mini celebration when we find we have a lunchtime Saturday kick off, which is 10.45pm our time. So all you Blues complaining when we get a late 5.30pm kick off UK time just think about us watching half way round the world at 3.30am!
We have a great set of supporters and have become more like a family who have come together with the same burning drive, to watch their team be successful. We have an annual golf day which we held on Community Shield day last August and that may well become the date we hold it every year.
We also take part in a football quiz between all supporters clubs at The Pig every year, finishing runners up last time to the local Brisbane Roar supporters group. We have had a couple of mentions on local Fox Sports TV and also midway through the demolition derby last season at Old Trafford
The SKY TV commentator just happened to mention he had heard that the game was being watched by the Manchester City Supporters Club in Brisbane at The Pig N Whistle.
I have got to go back to the FA Cup Semi Final against United. That night to me was the night that the Brisbane Blues truly came of age. The locals had not witnessed scenes quite like it as we celebrated the win with gusto. In the past the United supporters had always far outnumbered City fans in The Pig, but that night they got the shock of their lives when over 100 City fans turned up. One had even driven all the way from Adelaide to join us (a 36 hour drive!) and one flew up from Melbourne which is a 2.5 hour flight.
We now have fans driving down long distances from North Queensland as they have heard about the famous Brisbane Blues and want to be part of it. Over 200 people turned up all dressed in City kits for what we named, The Night of the Champions on that unforgettable day last May.
The week following the QPR game was our end of season party and we decided as we could not enjoy the Champions bus parade round Manchester with the Premier League trophy, we would have our own open top bus parade here in Brisbane! We managed to hire an open top London bus and decorated it with City Flags and banners and went on a victory tour around Brisbane displaying our own version of the trophy. What a fantastic night that was!
We are now the proud owners of a Heart of The City award. The plaque was presented to the landlord, who I must say has been very helpful and accommodating (even opening us for us at 4.30 am on a Tuesday morning so we could get together to watch last season’s derby!). The plaque is now on display in the Pig N Whistle in a prominent position and will attract any passing Blues in to come and ask about us.
Any City fans that are travelling to Brisbane should drop in when there is a match on and you will be made most welcome!
