Young Blues ready for Macc test

Steve Eyre sends out City's Under-21s at Moss Rose tomorrow looking for the elite development squad to kick on from a fine opening to their pre-season programme.

Macclesfield will represent a proportionally tougher test for the Young Blues a week down the line than did new Club partners and 2-0 victims Hyde FC, says City coach Eyre.

He predicted: "Macc will be a step-up without a doubt. They're a full-time League club and have already been on a tour of Ireland where they beat a couple of teams by big scores.

"They are mature opponents who have started pre-season really well. We hope to play our part and compete as best we can physically while expressing our talent while in possession.

"We've stepped up our training since last week. Hyde was a good benchmark, but there should be that extra yard of pace now. This should be a fantastic game for our great young players.

"I'm looking forward to seeing the lads work to retain possession as they did at Hyde but against full-time opposition. That will be a real test and excellent for their development."

James Poole will play after being suspended for last week's opener, while Ryan McGivern - injured at Hyde - returns to the heart of defence after training for the last two days.

Eyre's delight at the manner of victory over Hyde with goals from Ahmad Benali and Chris Chantler was swiftly communicated to the Club tour in the United States.

He said: "There'll be big interest in the game in the States. Andy Welsh, Brian Kidd and Brian Marwood were all on the phone a few minutes after the final whistle at Hyde.

"Andy and Brian Kidd have phoned each day. They've sent their best wishes for tomorrow and I'm sure the door is open to all our young players provided they show the right attitude."

Former City and Macclesfield defender Rae Ingram is guest of honour at the game (KO 3pm).
