City EDS v Schalke: Match preview

City EDS are back in action on Tuesday evening when they take on Schalke in a friendly at Hyde.

The German side travel to Manchester for what should be a tight, hotly-contested encounter between two sides looking to gather momentum with the competitive calendar just getting under way.

Obendorf was the setting for the last meeting between the EDS and Schalke in August 2013, when the Germans triumphed over the English in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in the pre-season tournament in Germany.

Jordi Hiwula was on target during normal time, while City scored four our of six penalties as the shootout went into sudden death.

Back on English soil, the EDS opened this term's Premier League campaign with a tough assignment away to last season’s Champions, Chelsea. Only a last-minute goal denied a young City side a well-deserved point against the hosts, who fielded a strong side brimming with experience at this level.

Pablo Maffeo, one of three members of last year’s u18 squad who started the fixture after being promoted a year early, was one of the game’s standout performers and was desperately unlucky to cancel out his own opening goal when he turned the ball into his own net in the second half.

Charly Musonda secured all three points for the hosts in stoppage time, but Vieira will have been encouraged by a performance boasting quality and commitment from his young side and will be aiming to translate that into victory on Tuesday night when Schalke arrive in Manchester.

Kick off is 7pm at Hyde FC (SK14 5PL). Entry is free for all Seasoncard holders, while all other supporters can purchase tickets in advance from the ticket office or at the turnstiles on the night, priced at £3 for adults and £1 for concessions.

We’ll have live coverage on twitter as well as a match report and highlights here on mcfc.co.uk.
