British tennis’ next rising star Liam Broady has revealed he is a City fan – and reckons the Blues’ FA Cup triumph is spurring him towards success.
The 17-year-old from Stockport beat Australian Jason Kubler in straight sets to reach the final where he will face Australia’s Luke Saville.
"I would call myself a follower, not a supporter, because obviously I'm not home that much," said Broady, whose sister, Naomi, 21, is a former UK under-18s champion.
Obviously, I absolutely loved it when we won the FA Cup, but I think this is probably better and I probably got a bit more excited when I reached the final at Wimbledon
Broady beat German Robin Kern in three epic sets to reach the Boy’s Singles semi-final at 125th All England Championships and beat Kubler 6-4 6-3 to reach the final.
Broady has already won a junior boys doubles title at Wimbledon and could be set to follow in the footsteps of the great Fred Perry, who also hailed from Stockport.
He was cheered on to his victory by a patriotic home crowd on Court No.18 and is looking forward to Saturday's final. He is keeping his fingers crossed he won't be the only Brit playing this weekend, too.
“The support I had was great I am really pleased to be in the semis,” he said. “I’d love to follow in Andy Murray’s footsteps and it’s great that we’ve both had good tournaments this year.”
