Adam Carter from statistical wizards and must-follow on Twitter @OptaCity previews Monday's trip to Villa Park.

A trip to Villa Park awaits Roberto Mancini and his band of Champions on Monday night, as the Blues try to maintain their pursuit of Manchester United at the top of the Premier League table. It was at this stage last season, after 28 games, that City surrendered top spot in the league to their neighbours following a 1-0 defeat away to Swansea and we all know how that season panned out!

City usually enjoy their trips to Villa Park in the Premier League, winning 5 (33.33%) of their 15 previous visits there. In fact, the Blues have only won more away Premier League games at one other stadium, Newcastle United’s St James’ Park (6). The Blues have drawn 6 (40.00%) and lost 4 (26.67%) of the other 10 Premier League matches away to Aston Villa.

The Champions have taken 21 points from the 15 Premier League meetings between the two sides at Villa Park, meaning that in terms of points gained, the home of Aston Villa is statistically City’s favourite stomping ground. City have kept 3 (20.00%) clean sheets at Villa Park and have only failed to score in 2 (13.33%) of the 15 matches.

City have scored 17 goals away at Aston Villa in the Premier League, averaging 1.13 goal per game and  have only scored more Premier League away goals at Old Trafford (18), St James’ Park (18) and Craven Cottage (22). The Blues have also conceded 17 goals at Villa Park, making it the only Premier League ground where the Champions have a zero goal difference (based on a minimum of more than two games played).

Manchester City are facing Aston Villa for the 32nd time in the Premier League era. The Blues have won 17 (54.84%) of the previous 31 Premier League meetings between the two sides, drawing 8 (25.81%) and losing on just 6 (19.35%) occasions. City’s points haul of 59 points from the 93 available in the Premier League is also their highest such tally against all the teams they have faced, averaging 1.57 points per game.

The Blues have scored 56 goals (1.80 gpg) against Aston Villa in all 31 of their previous Premier League meetings, again a feat that is unmatched against any other team that City have faced in the Premier League era. In terms of goals conceded, the Champions have seen their goal breached on a mere 30 occasions (0.96 gpg). In addition to this, City have kept 11 (35.48%) Premier League clean sheets against Aston Villa and have only failed to score on 4 (12.90%) occasions.
