A dominant first-half performance helped City’s Under 18s secure a 3-2 victory at Bolton Wanderers in the Barclays Premier Academy League.

Adam Sadler’s side came into the game fresh from their midweek 4-1 victory against Corby Town in the FA Youth Cup and started the match at Bolton with confidence and flair.

City goalkeeper Tom Halsall was redundant for the majority of the first 45 minutes such was the away team’s dominance. The Blues controlled possession and created numerous opportunities with some excellent team-play in an impressive opening half.

Albert Rusnak went close with a shot from the edge of the area, but it was Devante Cole who gave City a deserved lead. With 22 minutes gone, Cole lifted the ball over the onrushing Trotters goalkeeper to put Sadler’s side ahead.

The first half continued in the same vein, with City keeping possession and looking to open up Bolton’s defence with clever inventive movement coming primarily from midfielders Rusnak and George King.

After the break the Blues had a plethora of chances to increase their lead, with George Evans, Jordi Hiwula and Rusnak all coming close to getting on the score-sheet.

The commanding display deserved a second goal and it came on 61 minutes. Rusnak’s cross-come-shot was only parried by the Bolton goalkeeper, and the prolific Hiwula was on hand to tap the ball in from close range.

With City perhaps slipping into a comfort zone of sorts, Bolton dragged themselves back into the game with two goals in a 10-minute period and from a winning position, it seemed the hosts may go on and collect all three points.

But the Blues stepped up their game again and a cross from Evans was slotted in the net by George Glendon to restore City’s lead and guarantee Sadler’s side travelled home with all three points.

Head of Academy Mark Allen couldn’t fault the Blues’ first-half performance and admitted the lads will learn from the mistakes they made when letting Bolton back into the game.

“I thought we had a flawless first-half and looked very comfortable at 2-0,” he said.

“But we had a sloppy 10 minute-period that allowed Bolton back into the game and gave them hope. That is a lesson for the lads to learn. But we scored a superb third goal and I think overall be were worthy of the win and deserved the three points.”
