Goal-hungry Jordi Hiwula did what he is best at, but the young England striker's performance wasn't enough to snatch victory for Adam Sadler's table-topping side.
City fell behind after just eight minutes against a handy Leeds side, although there was a little fortune about the goal, a free kick taking a big deflection to loop over helpless Angus Gunn.
Leeds more than held their own as the first half unfolded, but the Blues were level after 36 minutes when Hiwula was brought down by the goalkeeper following a quick Albert Rusnak free kick.
Rusnak stepped up to strike his penalty firmly to the left, and although the Leeds keeper got a hand to it he was unable to keep out the equaliser
With Leeds hitting the inside of a post from a free kick just before half time, it was clear there was still plenty of fight left in the visitors as the teams took the interval.
But City upped the tempo with the wind at their backs in the second half, although Kieran Kennedy's fine surge upfield after 64 minutes saw Devante Cole shoot over from close range.
The Blues finally took the lead after 76 minutes when Hiwula produced a trademark finish at the near post after Courtney Meppen-Walters set up the striker with a clever ball over the top.
But Leeds rode the blow to recover and will feel they deserved the 87th-minute equaliser they forced home in a goalmouth scramble to rescue a point.
