City Elite Development Squad’s NextGen Series qualification hopes are at an end after a narrow 2-1 defeat to PSG in their final Group 2 match.

Goals either side of half-time made it an uphill task for City’s under-19 selection and a spirited fightback just fell short after a Marcos Lopes penalty put them back in touch with 10 minutes to play.

Lombardo’s men were still in with a chance of qualifying for the knockout rounds as one of four best third-place teams, but results elsewhere consigned the Blues to the exit door of the u19 European competition.

PSG began the match brightly and enjoyed sustained periods of pressure on the City defence which held firm until the half hour mark.

Pierre Bourdin gave was on hand to give the hosts the lead and it seemed to wake City from their slumber but their late flurry of corner kicks in the first period failed to yield an equaliser.

The Parisians doubled their advantage after 60 minutes after an Ian Lawlor clearance was picked up on by the home side’s midfield and a side-foot finish into the bottom corner from Habran capped a devastating counter-attack.

Last time the teams met in August at Hyde the scoreline was 2-0 in PSG’s favour but City weren’t going to let history repeat itself.

First-year scholar Dominic McHale was introduced with 10 minutes to play and his impact was immediate as he picked up the ball, jinked through the PSG defence with great trickery and was felled to win his side a penalty which Marcos Lopes powered home comprehensively.

The Blues pressed on in the search for a leveller but the home side closed ranks and kept City at bay to maintain their superb record at the top of the group.

City EDS are next in action on Monday night at Telford FC in their penultimate Barclays U21 Premier League fixture before Christmas.
