Looking back through the history books for the events, signings and memorable matches that happened on this day in City’s history.
Saturday 5th August 1972
Despite not winning any trophies the season before, City and Aston Villa contest the FA Charity Shield annual season curtain-raiser at Villa Park.
Normally, the Charity Shield would have been contested by the First Division champions and FA Cup holders, who were Derby County and Leeds United, but both declined the chance to play in game.
Instead, City, who had finished in fourth place in the First Division and Aston Villa, who finished as Third Division champions, accepted the invitation to play.
The match was played in Birmingham and a Franny Lee penalty proved enough to start the season with some silverware for Malcolm Allison’s side.
Wednesday 5th August 1982
City’s pre-season plans begin disastrously with an 8-0 defeat away to Werder Bremen. John Bond’s side are hopelessly outclassed against the Bundesliga outfit but restore some pride three days later with a 1-1 draw against Dutch side PSV Eindhoven.
Sunday 5th August 1983
City’s pre-season tour of Scotland ends miserably as the cash-strapped Blues are beaten 3-1 in a friendly with Partick Thistle. Derek Parlane scores City’s only goal while the Pars’ scorers were McDowall, Cochrane and Herd.
