Looking back through the history books for the events, signings and memorable matches that happened on this day in City’s history.

Saturday 28 August 1993

City fans question the wisdom of Peter Swales’ latest managerial appointment when Oxford boss Brian Horton is installed in the Maine Road hot-seat following Peter Reid’s dismissal. Cruelly, some papers lead with the headline ‘Brian Who? This is Horton’s first top-flight job, but his attacking brand of football quickly wins over the doubters.

Nicolas Anelka scores his first hat-trick in City colours as the Blues beat Everton 3-1 at Maine Road. The Frenchman scores in the 14th, 16th and 85th minutes. City move up to sixth in the Premier League as a result.

Thursday 28 August 2008
City ride their luck as they progress to the first round of the UEFA Cup via a penalty shoot-out victory over FC Midtjylland of Denmark. Having surprisingly lost the first leg 1-0 at home, the Blues were still expected to progress despite the set-back. Although City did eventually prevail, the game certainly did not go to plan and it took a dramatic last-minute own-goal to save Mark Hughes’ side’s blushes and take the game into extra-time. Vedran Corluka scores the winning penalty, after Joe Hart saved two spot-kicks for City.

Thursday 28 August 2008

Shaun Wright-Phillips re-joins City after three seasons with Chelsea. The England winger’s signing causes plenty of excitement among the Blues’ supporters with one of their favourite sons returning. Wright-Phillips will mark his return in style, scoring twice in a 3-0 win at Sunderland just a few days later.
