Looking back through the history books for the events, signings and memorable matches that happened on this day in City’s history.
Saturday 3rd August 1968
City post a new FA record by beating West Brom 6-1 at Maine Road to win Charity Shield in front of almost 40,000 fans.
Because the Blues had won the league title the previous season, the rules back in the pre-Wembley days were that the league champions hosted the annual curtain-raiser against the FA Cup holders on their own patch.
The Blues went to town on the Baggies who even attempted to stop the rot by changing keepers at the break. Goals from Francis Lee (2), Bobby Owen (2), Neil Young and an own goal complete the rout.
