Looking back through the history books for the events, signings and memorable matches that happened on this day in City’s history.
Thursday 9th August 1990
Former City manager Joe Mercer passed away on the day of his 76th birthday. Mercer changed the history of the Blues by taking the club from Second Division mediocrity to the league title within three years of arriving at Maine Road along with the irrepressible Malcolm Allison as his No.2.
Mercer guided City to five trophies in five years and transformed an ailing giant back into a stylish, attack-minded side that played attractive football with more than a hint of steel behind the silk.
Friday 9th August 2003
City sent a strong XI to take on non-League Clitheroe and the locals – all 234 of them – enjoyed a 7-1 drubbing but the visitors with goals from Darren Huckerby (3), Christian Negouai (2), Stephen Elliot and Lee Croft.
