Looking back through the history books for the events, signings and memorable matches that happened on this day in City’s history.
Thursday 15th August 1996
City’s relegation to the second tier means several top earners have to be culled in order to balance the books – among them is the hugely popular Niall Quinn, believed to be one of the highest-paid players at the time, who is sold to Sunderland.
Quinn had joined City from Arsenal in 1991 for £700,000 and went on to form a devastating partnership with David White before moving to the Black Cats where he would eventually finish his career and later become chairman.
Quinn remains a popular figure among the City faithful.
