Another short stint for Tony Book sees just one game this time in his fifth spell as caretaker manager. His only game on this occasion is a 1-1 draw with Coventry City at Maine Road, in which Mike Sheron scored for City.

City travel to happy hunting ground Turf Moor to take on Division One leaders Burnley and replace the Clarets at the top of the table after a comprehensive 4-2 victory. Shaun Goater grabs a hat-trick with goals after 17, 62 and 86 minutes and Paulo Wanchope adds another on 50 as Kevin Keegan’s side begins to take shape.

Joleon Lescott makes his debut as City progress to the third round of the Carling Cup with a 2-0 win at Crystal Palace. Mark Hughes names a full strength side as the Blues set out on a quest to end the wait for silverware. The Eagles hold City until the 50th minute when Shaun Wright-Phillips converts Stephen Ireland’s clever pass to put the visitors 1-0 up. The match is all but over 20 minutes later when Carlos Tevez heads home Wright-Phillips’ cross to double the Blues’ lead and end Palace’s resistance.
