Tuesday 29th August 1978
New signing Ron Futcher, an £80,000 capture from NASL side Minnesota Kicks, makes his City debut in a League Cup tie away to Grimsby Town. Roger Palmer scores one of the goals in a 2-0 win at Blundell Park, watched by 21,148 fans. Another new signing, Colin Viljoen, also makes his debut, coming on a s a 75th-minute substitute for Futcher.
Saturday 29th August 1981
The Blues make their latest start to a league campaign since 1946 – just three days short of September – with a 2-1 victory over West Brom at Maine Road. Goals from Dennis Tueart and Tommy Hutchison earn the points in City’s first game since the FA Cup final defeat to Tottenham the previous May.
