Looking back through the history books for the events, signings and memorable matches that happened on this day in City’s history.

Friday 10 July 1964

City defender Bill Leivers calls time on an 11-year career at Maine Road by joining Doncaster Rovers on a free transfer.

Bill Leivers

Leivers, a strapping centre-half, joined City from Chesterfield in 1953 for a not-insubstantial fee of £10,500 and went on to make 250 league starts for the Blues, initially at right-back before reverting to central defence, and played 281 games in total, including the 1956 FA Cup Final.

Gritty, uncompromising and reliable, Leivers perhaps should have had greater recognition for his country rather than one appearance for an FA XI. His fearless style of defending earned him five broken noses during his playing days and he was a typical No.5 in every sense.

Tomorrow: Alex Williams joins the Blues
