Ken Barnes

City legend Ken Barnes dies after a period of ill-health.

Barnes, father of 1970s City star Peter, was famously known as ‘the best uncapped defender who ever played in English football’, as christened by goal poacher par excellence Denis Law. Signed from Stafford Rangers, Barnes would take four years to break into the first team.

Once established, however, he would rarely miss a game in the first team and appeared in both the 1955 and 1956 FA Cup finals.

He moved to Wrexham in 1961 and became player-manager of the Welsh team, guiding them to promotion in his first year.

He returned to City in 1970 as trainer/coach before becoming chief scout and discovered many youngsters who went on to play for the first team.

Ken finally got his first England cap when, in June 1977, his son Peter handed over the honour after appearing for his country against Italy.

Joe Mercer Malcolm Allison

Joe Mercer is appointed as City’s new manager.

One of the most respected men in football and regarded by many as not just a great wing-half in his days at Everton and later Arsenal, but possibly the best ever.

He moved into management with Sheffield United and was later installed as Aston Villa boss. He took the Midlands side to promotion from Division Two, won the League Cup and led them to two FA Cup semi-finals. The pressures and stress of management took their toll on him and he suffered a minor stroke and was later sacked by Villa.

Mercer’s love of the game pulled him back and in 1965, when City offered him the opportunity of waking a sleeping giant, he grabbed the chance with both hands and went on to become the Blues’ greatest manager of all time.

Tomorrow: Carlos Tevez moves across Manchester.
