Looking back through the history books for the events, signings and memorable matches that happened on this day in City’s history.

Tuesday 20th July 1966

Former brickie Tony Book signs from Plymouth Argyle, aged 32.

For City, it represents something of a gamble with the ageing full-back untried in the top flight, but Malcolm Allison convinces Joe Mercer and the City board to part with around £50,000 for his services.

It turns out to be one of the best signings City ever make, with Book taking over the captaincy and leading the Blues to trophy after trophy in a fairy-tale Indian summer to his career.

Book plays 309 times over the next seven years before retiring and eventually taking over as City boss in 1974. He then guides the Blues to a League Cup success and comes within a point of winning the league title.
