Looking back through the history books for the events, signings and memorable matches that happened on this day in City’s history.
Thursday 26 July 1984
David Phillips travels a well-trodden path from Plymouth Argyle to City by signing for £200,000 prior to the 1984/85 campaign.
The midfielder proves to be an inspired buy for Billy McNeill, playing a pivotal role in midfield and scoring 12 times during his first season, helping City win promotion back to the top flight.
His eight goals in 12 games midway through the campaign ensured the Blues kept right on the tails of the leading clubs and he also scored twice in the 5-1 final day victory over Charlton that confirmed City’s place back in the top flight.
Following relegation, he was sold days after the 1985/86 season had ended having played 94 times and scored 13 goals.
Phillips went on to play for Coventry City, Norwich City and Nottingham Forest
