Looking back through the history books for the events, signings and memorable matches that happened on this day in City’s history.

Saturday 1st October 1981

Asa Hartford returns to the club for a second spell as a player. Just two years after leaving Maine Road for Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest in 1979, the Scottish midfielder is bought by City manager John Bond. Though he’d been part of the League Cup winning side of 1976 during his first spell at the club. Following the appointment of Alan Ball as manager in 1996, Hartford re-joined the club in a coaching capacity and spent another nine years at City, including a spell in caretaker charge, before Stuart Pearce joined as manager in 2005 and appointed his own backroom staff.
