Looking back through the history books for the events, signings and memorable matches that happened on this day in City’s history.
Wednesday 15th September 1971
City play in Texaco Cup for first time and draw 2-2 with Airdrie. Ian Mellor and Mike Doyle score the goals in front of just over 15,000 Maine Road fans. A forerunner of the Anglo-Scottish Cup, the Texaco Cup was no more than a series of slightly more competitive friendlies than the usual pre-season fare. The very first games were actually played during the 1971–72 season and the Blues crashed out in round one. The tournament then became pre-season and the next time they entered, the Blues went out in the group stages. City fans have just had to live without the glory of a Texaco Cup triumph.
Saturday 15th September 2002
City recover from 2-0 down against Blackburn Rovers to score twice in the last ten minutes – this despite losing Danny Tiatto to a red card in the 67th minute. Goals from Nicolas Anelka and Shaun Goater send the home fans away smiling and keep the Blues in eleventh spot.
