Looking back through the history books for the events, signings and memorable matches that happened on this day in City’s history.
Monday 9 September 2003
Lee Croft and Paulo Wanchope are on target as City reserves record their first victory of the season with a 2-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers at Hyde with 1,157 there to see it.
Saturday 9 September 1989
Clive Allen scores his first City goal following his £1.1m move from Bordeaux. A typical poacher’s finish, the former Tottenham man condemns old his club QPR to defeat as the Blues cling on for a 1-0 victory at Maine Road – their first in five attempts. The victory moves City up one place to 18th and relieves the pressure on manager Mel Machin – albeit temporarily. Allen, meanwhile, goes on to be a huge crowd favourite during his brief time with the Club.
Saturday, 9 September 1978
City beat a strong Leeds United side 3-0 at Maine Road to end a dismal start to the season. The Blues had failed to win any of their first four Division One games prior to the win and went into the game in 15th position, while Leeds were among the leading pack. A healthy crowd of 40,125 see upcoming young striker Roger Palmer score twice and Dave Watson add another to finally get the season up and running, though it would ultimately be a campaign of great upheaval and disappointment as Tony Book’s successful side gradually were broken up by returning coach Malcolm Allison.
