World Cup winner David Silva will have to wait until the beginning of next month until he runs into Nigel de Jong again after Spain’s triumph over Holland in the final at South Africa 2010.

Next time they the Spaniard, signed from Valencia, and de Jong, one of last season’s great City success stories, meet they will be both on the same side and looking for more glory in the blue of Roberto Mancini’s new look squad.

After their exertions in Africa neither man will be asked to join the Blues’ extensive three week USA tour that began when the team landed in Portland, Oregon.

After a week of double training sessions at Carrington in the build up to the trip, the players were given the day off yesterday to watch their teammates in the final.

Some viewed the Johannesburg decider in the hotel but Shay Given and Adam Johnson were two who chose to watch at least the first half of the game in a nearby fan park where thousands of locals – equally split in their support – enjoyed the occasion.

The players will be back to double sessions tomorrow, early in the morning and then in the evening so as to avoid the heat building up to the opening match, a scrimmage game against soon-to-be MLS side Portland Timbers on Saturday.

From there it is on to the New York tournament containing the host city’s Red Bulls, Sporting Lisbon and fellow Premier League side Spurs and finally on to Atlanta and Baltimore.

Star names will be feeding into the squad at various intervals in the next few days. The Toure brothers Kolo and Yaya will be first and the England contingent of Gareth Barry, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Joe Hart will follow.

Boss Mancini has brought a number of promising youngsters with the squad including, amongst others, Dedryck Boyata, Greg Cunningham and Abdi Ibrahim who all featured in the first team last season and strikers Alex Tchuimeni-Nimely and Swede John  Guidetti.

All are likely to get some game time during the early stages of the tour.
