Roque Santa Cruz was so upset by Paraguay's quarter-final defeat in South Africa that the Blues striker could not bear to sit through Spain's World Cup final victory.
Santa spent the day out in the countryside with his young family rather than sit watching TV and regretting the way that the Spaniards had squeezed into the semi-finals.
It was another two days before Rocky found out that Paraguay's conquerors had overcome Nigel de Jong's Netherlands in the final with another 1-0 win to become world champions.
He is back in training at Carrington this week before joining up with Roberto Mancini's senior squad when they return from the club's tour of the United States.
But he admitted: "It was hard to accept going out the way we did. They beat Holland to win the World Cup, but they know they could have lost the game against us!
Spain were favourites from the start so we knew it was going to be hard, but we felt we didn't get the good fortune to go with the way we played
"They didn't create any chances until they scored, we had the penalty that we missed, and then we missed our chances when we should have equalised before the end.
"The quarter-finals was our goal. And if you are knocked out by the team that wins the World Cup, I suppose that is a consolation. But I just didn't want to watch the final.
"I was away with my family, and we spent that day together as well as the day after. Only when I got home did I find out what had happened. I was not so keen to know.
"We were still hurt about our elimination, and I didn't want to know about the World Cup anymore."
