Gareth Barry has won his dramatic race to make Fabio Capello's England World Cup squad for South Africa.
City midfielder Barry is on tomorrow's flight to Johannesburg with his 22 team-mates after being given the green light following a thorough medical earlier today.
Gareth has been battling to beat the clock since damaging ankle ligaments during the second half of City's final home game of the season against Tottenham on May 5.
Manager Capello went ahead and named one of his favourite midfielders in the initial 30-strong squad with the proviso that Barry would need to prove his fitness for a final place.
His daily fight for recovery, which included the regular use of an oxygen tent, has paid off, even though it is unlikely he will be ready to face the United States in the opener on June 12.
Barry's medical confirmed that he is close to full fitness and on course to be available for England's other two Group C matches against Algeria on June 18 and Slovenia on June 23.
