Roque Santa Cruz is confident Paraguay can reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup – at the very least.
The South Americans have looked well-organised and focused in their opening matches and finished top of their group even though they could only muster a 0-0 draw with New Zealand yesterday.
Roque has represented his country for the last 11 years, winning 72 caps in the process and he believes there is no reason why the Guaranies, who have never progressed past the last 16 before, can’t create history in South Africa.
"We're very happy to have qualified, but it was a very difficult game against New Zealand,” he said. “The game became boring because they were so defensive. In a match like this you expect to win but the important thing is we qualified.
"There is always room for improvement but I think the whole team has worked very well so far.
"We are now at an historic point in time. I believe it is now up to us to get to where we want to be because we have the potential.
This is the best team Paraguay has ever had. We have been playing together for many years and are very experienced and mentally strong

“We have never been to the quarter-finals before so that is our immediate goal. If we reach that stage, anything is possible.
"People might underestimate us, but it’s worth remembering we have beaten Argentina and Brazil, two of the best teams in the world, to get here.”
