Shaun Wright-Phillips wore his widest smile today as the popular City winger made the final cut for England's World Cup squad in South Africa.
But there was only heartache for Blues team-mate Adam Johnson, who discovered he was among the seven players omitted from Fabio Capello's final 23-man squad.
It was touch and go who would receive the dreaded phone call from England's coach to explain that they had not made the final selection for the party to fly out tomorrow to Johannesburg.
Wright-Phillips' hopes of making the trip had been raised by his performance from the bench in the 3-1 victory over Mexico at Wembley, when his presence helped England swing the game.
And SWP also won his 31st cap by coming on in the second half of Monday's unconvincing 2-1 win over Japan in Graz, replacing Arsenal's Theo Walcott effectively to aid England's fightback.
But Johnson, who forced his way into the reckoning with a brilliant second half of the campaign, only had five minutes to impress over the course of the two warm-up games.
Experienced Joe Cole's ability to play a wide role, aligned to Capello's belief that Adam, 22, will be the finished article in four years' time, looks to have edged him out of the picture.
So Roberto Mancini's talented January signing will not be joining the City trio of Shaun, midfielder Gareth Barry and goalkeeper Joe Hart as they chase World Cup glory.
