Every year one or two promising young players progress through the club’s youth system and into the senior team. This season, it’s been Belgian centre-half Dedryck Boyata and Irish left-back Greg Cunningham.
While Boyata has played several times for Roberto Mancini’s side since Christmas, Cunningham’s one senior appearance to date came against Scunthorpe in January when replaced Nedum Onuoha at half-time and promptly picked up a yellow card with his first challenge!
It was quite an introduction for the 30th graduate from City’s ever-productive Academy, but he didn’t allow it to affect his game and he gave a solid display as the Blues went on to win 4-2.
In fact, the 19-year-old left-back’s performance was enough to convince Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni to include the County Galway-born teenager in his latest squad to face Brazil – where Cunningham could face on-loan team-mate Robinho!
He will also have City’s Shay Given on hand for help and advice in what is likely to be the first of many caps for his country.
