Barry gets England call

Gareth Barry's World Cup dream is still alive after Fabio Capello named the injured City midfielder in his provisional squad of 30 players for South Africa next month.

Barry is recuperating from an ankle injury sustained during the second half of the defeat to Tottenham in the last home game of the season but England's coach is giving him time.

The former England Under-21 skipper is one of the first names Capello pencils in for his teamsheet, and he will make the trip to the Austrian preparation camp in six days' time.

Both City wingers Shaun Wright-Phillips and late challenger Adam Johnson are also in the squad, which will be pared down to a final 23 on June 1, the day before England fly out to Johannesburg.

Johnson, who leapt into contention after his January move from Middlesbrough, is one of only two uncapped players in the 30-man squad alongside Tottenham defender Michael Dawson.

As widely expected, Joe Hart's brilliant season on loan at Birmingham is rewarded by a place as one of the three goalkeepers. But Joleon Lescott's injury means he has missed out after figuring earlier in Capello's plans.

Automatic choice Kolo Toure is in Sven Goran Eriksson's Ivory Coast squad. Similarly, Robinho is in the Brazilian 30 while Nigel de Jong is a predictable pick for Holland.
